Editorial policy
The principles behind every guide on Fenceline Handbook.
Independence
Fenceline Handbook is editorially independent. No manufacturer, retailer, installer or trade body pays for coverage, reviews or links. We do not accept free products in exchange for coverage. We currently carry no advertising and no affiliate links.
Choosing topics
We write about the questions UK homeowners actually face with garden boundaries: what to build, whether it is allowed, who is responsible and how to do the job. We prioritise subjects where mistakes are costly or where widely repeated advice is wrong, such as height limits and boundary ownership.
Writing
- Guides are written by a named author, Gareth Owen, whose background is described honestly.
- Legal and planning statements are based on legislation and official guidance, not on other websites. See how we research.
- Where the rules differ between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, or between councils, we say so.
- We do not invent statistics, testimonials or quotes, and we label prices as approximate and dated.
- We avoid naming brands or products, because specifications and prices change and we do not test products.
Updating
Each guide shows the date it was last updated. We review guides when legislation or official guidance changes, when a reader reports a problem, and at least once a year. Cost guides are reviewed more often.
Corrections
We correct errors promptly. Significant changes are reflected in the updated date. See fact-checking and corrections.
Our content standards set out the detailed rules on accuracy, tone and safety.
