Fenceline Handbook

Disclaimer

Our guides help you understand the subject. They do not replace advice on your specific situation.

General information only

Fenceline Handbook provides general information about garden fencing, gates, hedges and boundaries in the UK. It is not legal advice, planning advice, surveying advice, structural engineering or insurance advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional who knows the facts of your case.

Rules vary

Planning, boundary and property law differs between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and individual councils, planning conditions, Article 4 directions and covenants in deeds can change the position for a particular property. Always confirm with your local planning authority or the relevant official source before relying on a rule. Our planning guide explains where to check.

Boundary disputes

If you are in a dispute with a neighbour, get advice from a solicitor or a surveyor who specialises in boundaries, or try mediation. Do not remove or alter a fence or hedge you do not own on the strength of a general guide.

Safety

Fencing work involves heavy materials, digging, power tools and sometimes height. Follow manufacturers' instructions, use appropriate protective equipment, check for buried services before digging and get help with heavy lifts. If a job is beyond your skills or the structure needs design, such as a retaining wall or a tall wall, use a competent professional.

Prices

Any prices on the site are approximate ranges, dated and intended for rough budgeting only. They are not quotes.
